Most of the tampons currently available on the market are made from a rayon/cotton blend. Rayon is reconstituted wood pulp and its production involves the use of many harsh and toxic chemicals. The cotton that is used in traditional tampons has usually been grown using more than 35 different herbicides and pesticides. After harvesting, it is washed and bleached. This manufacturing process has a very high level of harmful chemicals which add considerably to the body system. Research currently being carried out in the United States is showing that, during their lifetime, women take in twice their body weight in toxic chemicals, compared with men, who take in half their body weight.

Surveys show that many women have changed from tampons to pads due to fears related to Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). Research into TSS has given no clear answer to the cause of the syndrome, but it is believed that the pesticides, chemicals and bleaches used in the growing, manufacturing and whitening of tampons are a major contributing factor. Eco Yarn Organic Cotton Tampons are made from certified organic cotton, which is washed in pure natural soaps to remove the natural waxes, whiten, and make the cotton absorbent. The cotton is then processed into tampons, and each individual tampon is wrapped in cellophane. The boxes are safely sealed with a sticker.
